MSc Aviation Safety & Human Factors

This module provides a comprehensive understanding of how safety management systems (SMS) operate within the aviation industry. You’ll examine international safety standards, performance monitoring tools, and reporting mechanisms used by airlines, airports, and regulators. The module also explores how data-driven safety assurance and proactive risk management contribute to a strong safety culture.

Explore the psychological and physiological principles underlying human performance in aviation. You’ll study how attention, perception, fatigue, stress, and decision-making influence behaviour and performance in safety-critical roles. The module helps you identify human limitations and develop strategies to reduce errors and improve operational reliability.

This module examines how human, organisational, and technical systems interact to influence safety outcomes. You’ll integrate theories of human error, situational awareness, and system safety to assess operational risk. Through case studies and applied analysis, you’ll develop the skills to design safer work systems and embed human factors principles in organisational policy and training.

Develop the leadership and communication skills required to manage crises and high-pressure situations in aviation. You’ll learn how to apply crisis management frameworks, coordinate multi-disciplinary teams, and make effective decisions under uncertainty. The module emphasises emotional intelligence, resilience, and cultural awareness in global aviation operations.

Undertake a consultancy-style project focused on an aviation safety or human factors challenge. You’ll work on a real or simulated industry brief, applying your learning to deliver professional recommendations, reports, and strategic insights aligned with sector standards.

Conduct an independent piece of academic research on a specialised area of aviation safety or human performance. You’ll design and execute a research proposal, collect and analyse data, and present findings that contribute to knowledge and practice in the aviation field.
